Higher Power Bills Are Coming Your Way?

The Victorian Premium Feed-in Tariff (PFiT) is ending on 1 November 2024.

Introduced in 2009, the PFiT provided a generous incentive for solar households, paying “60 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh)*” for excess solar energy exported to the grid. However, it was a “limited-time program” and is set to close after a 15-year run.

Key Details of the PFiT Ending:

1. Eligibility End: After 1  November 2024, households on the PFiT will no longer receive the 60 cents per kWh tariff for exported energy.

2. Transition to Standard Feed-in Tariff (FiT): Once the PFiT ends, participants will automatically transition to the **standard feed-in tariff** offered by their energy retailer, which is much lower (typically between **5 to 7 cents per kWh**).

3. Impact on Solar Households:
– Solar households that have been benefitting from the PFiT will experience a significant reduction in payments for excess electricity sent to the grid.
– The lower feed-in tariff will reduce the financial return on exported solar energy, prompting many households to explore ways to optimize their system or energy usage.

What Should You Do?

1. Talk to Your Local Trusted Solar Installer

There is no one-size-fits-all strategy. The following are things to consider. However, we have often told people to wait, get a service, or, in fact, do nothing.

It all depends on your circumstances. In the end, we want your solar system to serve you and your family well. Read the following, and we suggest that you contact us to give you the best advice we can.

2. Consider Increasing the Size of Your Solar System or Installing a New One

– If your current system is undersized or aging, consider upgrading to a larger system to offset the lower feed-in tariff.
– Adding a second system could boost solar generation, especially if your energy usage has increased since the original system was installed.
– Alternatively, replacing your existing system with a newer, more efficient, and larger system can help meet your household’s growing energy needs and enhance savings.

 3. Review Your Current Tariff

– With the Premium Feed-in Tariff ending, you’ll automatically switch to a standard, lower rate. Compare this with other plans to get the best deal for your exported energy.

 4. Consider Energy Storage (Battery)

– Installing a battery allows you to store excess energy generated during the day and use it when solar production is low or non-existent. This reduces your reliance on the grid.
– Victorian government rebates can help cover part of the installation cost.

 5. Check Your Energy Usage Patterns

– Review your household’s energy usage and consider shifting more energy consumption to the daytime, when your solar system generates the most power. Smart appliances and timers can help you optimize this.

6. Look for Better Retail Plans

– Different energy retailers offer different feed-in tariffs and pricing for solar users. Shop around for a better deal, especially one with a higher feed-in rate or more favourable consumption rate.

7. Optimize Solar System Performance

Regular maintenance, including cleaning the panels and checking for shading issues, ensures your system runs at peak efficiency, helping you get the most out of your solar investment.

8. Stay Informed on Government Incentives

Keep an eye on changing government policies and new incentives. The Victorian Solar Homes Program may offer additional rebates for system upgrades, batteries, or other energy-efficient improvements.

9. Energy Efficiency Improvements

– Reduce your household’s energy consumption by upgrading to energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, or better insulation. This can increase the amount of solar power you use and lower your overall energy bills.

10. Install a Smart Meter

– A **smart meter** gives you detailed, real-time insights into your household’s energy usage and solar generation. With this data, you can better understand when and how to use your solar power most effectively and potentially identify ways to reduce consumption.
– Some retailers offer special solar tariffs for homes with smart meters, which could further improve your savings.
